7 Looks For Apple Shapes
Seven looks for an apple shape body! I did a guide for how to style an apple shape body with a shopping guide which you can read here if you want a more in depth breakdown of how to style your shape. I wanted to dive a little deeper and put together some full looks of inspiration. I had so much fun putting these looks together and love the sort of fall tropical vibe road I ended up taking. It is important to know your measurements, and if you are unsure of how to get them check out my how to measuring guide.
A good visual tool is taking a full body photo of yourself wearing your underwear or fitted clothes like leggings and a sport bra. Print the photo and draw the shapes you want to create over you silhouette. You want to look at your clothing in this way as well. If you are apple and want to create and hourglass shape you want look at your upper body with a triangle and inverted triangle on your lower half. You are creating visual balance by broadening the shoulder and hip lines and cinching the waist. You can achieve this through color, texture, print, and structure of the garment.
It is important to remember that our bodies are unique and will most likely not fit exactly into an exact shape. Body shape is determined by your bone structure but, your weight and where you carry it also plays a large role shape. For example you may be an hourglass and you gain weight making your body more of an apple shape. It is the same thing if your build muscle it changes your shape. That’s why it is really important to understand your body and how clothes fit and drape on it. It makes shopping so much easier because, you know what shapes, colors, fabrications that look and feel good on you.
Some would say to avoid slim fit jeans if you are an apple. This is because they draw attention to your slim legs making your upper body look bigger which is true but, that doesn’t mean you only have wear wide leg pants for the rest of your days. You want to look for styles like this, stove pipe, peg pant, or straight leg pants. These will add a little volume to your hips while still giving you a slim leg. These lettuce or paper bag waist jeans check all of the boxes. The waist detailing gives you sort of built in belted a belted look while also camouflaging the tummy area.
I love this this wrap style take on a suit jacket it is a perfect style for an apple shape. It has a nice deep v drawing your eye down the point of the triangle and it stops at the smallest point of the waist, with the belt giving you options to tie it in different ways. The pleating on the trousers add depth to your hips. Apple shapes generally have slim legs and hips. So you want to look for details and shapes that will add fullness like pleats, gathering, panels.
The goal is to create the triangle shape on your lower half because, it balances out the upper body. You can also do this by using color and this is the perfect example. The deep v neckline of this jacket on it’s own gives your torso that beautiful point. By adding a darker contrast color underneath and you are now amplifying the effect. That contour on your face makes your cheekbones pop and that is the same principle when applied to your wardrobe.
This was my favorite look out of the bunch. This is the perfect example of experimenting with and using texture to create shape. A line skirts are a must in apple wardrobe they are practically a triangle skirt! I die for this vegan leather pleated skirt from Proenza Schouler. The texture and weight of this skirt gives the lower half so much dimension. This beautiful balloon sleeve crop is giving texture for days! Thinking about the inverted triangle on the upper body, the oversized sleeve and square neckline create the triangle base.
You have the difference in texture carving out the point between the satin sleeve and knit bodice bringing the eye down to the smallest point of the waist. You also have the difference in color and texture between the top and skirt that clearly defines the waist. Keep color and texture in mind when building your looks. This outfit in monochrome line would be just as flattering but, the depth that mixing the texture and color makes it more impactful.
A good wrap dress should really be in all of our closets. I don’t think I have ever seen someone not look good in one. I chose this one in particular for an apple because, of the lines, drape, and fabric. You have the classic wrap v neckline cinching everything in at the waistline but, this is where the small details come in to really amplify your shape. Starting with this peasant style gathered sleeve, it adds volume to your arms and upper body. The belt can be tied in different ways and also adds dimension to your hips. The curved hem is beautiful adding movement and dimension. The drape of the fabric will glide over your curves giving you shape without clinging and the satin catching the light. The small details make a difference on the simplest of garments.
I think another good staple for everyone’s closet is a well fitted jumpsuit! There are so many styles to choose from so it is important to know what styles work well on an apple body shape. Leopard prints are always a great neutral choice I call it you get the impact of a print and still mixes so well with other colors and prints.
This jumpsuit is perfect for an apple shape another example of the wing sleeves creating that inverted triangle shape on the upper body. It has v neck that points right into a gathered waist. The gathering adds fullness and curve to the hip without adding too much bulk to the waistline.
I love a good short suit! I loved this one for the paneling detail on the shorts and length of the jacket. You want to avoid boxy shapeless styles. I jacket that is fitted and longer hitting below your hips will elongate your torso. It becomes even more dramatic when you add a belt over the jacket! It is a good habit to start really thinking about the balance of the layers. This for example would look really cute with or without the jacket. The graphic and colors of the t shirt really offer balance and depth to the look both ways.
Yes another wrap dress I know but, I fell in love with this and wanted to show an example of a form fitting style. A common mistake some people with apple shaped bodies is they try to cover everything up with loose fitting clothes. An by no means am I saying never wear a loose fitting top but, they don’t not define a new visual shape and you may appear larger then you are. You can use softer more lush fabrics to create a structured look. This dress is the perfect example of that with all of the draping structure may not be the first thing that comes to mind. The nice weight of the velvet that hugs the curves and creates and hourglass shape because, of the way it is draped.
